Cook’s Kitchen: Storm Hands II

Cook’s Kitchen: Storm Hands II

I know it hasn’t been that long since the last installment of Storm Hands, but it’s back! The list has changed since the previous article, mainly two different sideboard storm engines! This Storm Hands is going to concentrate on how to play all three sideboard engines properly.

Let’s take a look at the changes to the deck list.

This is my most current list of The EPIC Storm, it’s important to know what we’re working with to make the proper decisions. This article is going to include five basic hands. Let’s dive-in!

Hand I – TES is on the play against an unknown opponent

Opening Hand: Gitaxian Probe, Ponder, Brainstorm, Dark Ritual, Gemstone Mine, Gemstone Mine, and Duress.

This is a decent hand, not exactly the quickest hand but it will be able to be sculpted for whatever match-up you’re facing.

Keep.

Gitaxian Probe, draw Silence (18 life – Storm 1)
Gemstone Mine, tap Gemstone (2 Counters)
Cast Ponder, look at Chrome Mox, Rite of Flame, and Lion’s Eye Diamond (Storm 2)

The current hand is business light, as much as I’d like to keep this Ponder because of Lion’s Eye Diamond I think that it is proper to shuffle and draw.

The draw off of Ponder is Brainstorm
Pass the turn.

Untap, draw Chrome Mox.
Tap Gemstone Mine (1 Counter)
Play Brainstorm (Storm 1)
Draw Silence, City of Brass, and Burning Wish
Put Silence on top of the library, followed by Gemstone Mine
Put City of Brass onto the Battlefield
Followed by Chrome Mox, imprint Duress (Storm 2)
Tapping City of Brass and Chrome Mox to cast Burning Wish (17 Life – Storm 3)
Burning Wish will retrieve Diminishing Returns.
Pass the turn.

Untap, draw Gemstone Mine.

Now if the opponent were playing spells that interacted with The EPIC Storm, we could cast Silence to ensure that Diminishing Returns resolves. However, since this is an exercise, we’ll leave that mana open incase it’s needed.

Put second Gemstone Mine onto the Battlefield.
Tap Chrome Mox, play Dark Ritual (BBB – Storm 1)
Tap Gemstone Mine (2 Counters),
Tap City of Brass (16 life)
Cast Diminishing Returns (B – Storm 2)

I left the Gemstone Mine with one counter in play because there is one less land to draw post casting Diminishing Returns. This is important because of the ability to become Hellbent for Infernal Tutor.

Exiling: Lion’s Eye Diamond, Brainstorm, Scalding Tarn, Misty Rainforest, Chrome Mox, Infernal Tutor, Underground Sea, Rite of Flame, Lotus Petal, and Ponder.

New Diminishing Returns hand: Gitaxian Probe, Brainstorm, Flooded Strand, Duress, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Silence, and Ad Nauseam.

Normally I think I would cast Gitaxian Probe before the Brainstorm in order to find an extra card. Because of the fact that this hand has Ad Nauseam in it, I think it’s important to Brainstorm first. This allows the option of putting Ad Nauseam on top of the Library with the ability to draw a card.

Tap Gemstone Mine (0 Counters, Sacrifice it)
Play Brainstorm (B – Storm 3)
Draw Rite of Flame, Dark Ritual, and Gitaxian Probe.
Put back Rite of Flame first then Ad Nauseam on top of the Library.
Dark Ritual (BBB – Storm 4)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (BBB – Storm 5)
Gitaxian Probe, in response break Lion’s Eye Diamond (14 life, BBBRRR – Storm 6)
Draw and cast Ad Nauseam (R – Storm 7).

  • Rite of Flame (13 life)
  • Gemstone Mine (13 life)
  • Burning Wish (11 life)
  • City of Brass (11 life)
  • Chrome Mox (11 life)
  • Empty the Warrens (7 life)
  • Rite of Flame (6 life)
  • Volcanic Island (6 life)
  • Infernal Tutor (4 life)
  • Lotus Petal (4 life)

Stop Ad Nauseam
Play both Rite of Flame (RRRRRR – Storm 9).
Chrome Mox, Imprint Infernal Tutor (RRRRRR – Storm 10)
Lotus Petal (RRRRRR – Storm 11)
Burning Wish for Tendrils of Agony (RRRR – Storm 11)
Tap Chrome Mox and Sacrifice Lotus Petal (BBRRRR – Storm 11)
Cast Tendrils of Agony for 24 life (RR – Storm 12)

Hand II – TES is on the draw against an unknown opponent

Opening Hand: Gitaxian Probe, Infernal Tutor, Burning Wish, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Dark Ritual, Gemstone Mine, and Lotus Petal

This hand is incredible! It has Gitaxian Probe to look for potential disruption as well as a guaranteed turn one kill without percentages.

Keep.

Draw Ponder for turn.
Play Gemstone Mine
Cast Gitaxian Probe, draw Volcanic Island (18 life – Storm 1)
Tap Gemstone Mine (2 Counters), cast Dark Ritual (BBB – Storm 2)
Play Infernal Tutor, revealing Lion’s Eye Diamond (B – Storm 3).
Lotus Petal (B – Storm 4)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (B – Storm 5)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (B – Storm 6)
Sacrifice Lotus Petal,
Cast Burning Wish, in response break both Lion’s Eye Diamonds (BBBBBB – Storm 7)
Wish will choose Ill-Gotten Gains.
Ill-Gotten Gains, return the pair of Lion’s Eye Diamond and Infernal Tutor (BB – Storm 8)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (BB – Storm 9)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (BB – Storm 10)
Infernal Tutor, in response break both Lion’s Eye Diamonds (RRRBBB – Storm 11)
Infernal Tutor finds Burning Wish.
Burning Wish for Tendrils of Agony (RRBB – Storm 12)
Tendrils of Agony for 26 life (Storm 13)

Hand III – TES is on the play against an unknown opponent

Opening Hand – City of Brass, Infernal Tutor, Underground Sea, Burning Wish, Rite of Flame, Ponder, and Dark Ritual

An average hand, not exactly quick, lacks protection, but it’s solid.

Keep

Underground Sea, tap it, and cast Ponder (Storm 1)
Look at Ponder, Silence, and Scalding Tarn

None of these cards are desirable at the moment.

Shuffle. Draw Brainstorm
Pass the turn

Untap, draw Gemstone Mine.
Tap Underground Sea, Brainstorm (Storm 1)
Draw Gitaxian Probe, Infernal Tutor, and Chrome Mox
Put Gemstone on top of the library followed by Gitaxian Probe
Play City of Brass and then Chrome Mox, imprint Infernal Tutor (Storm 2)
Tap both of them (19 life) and play Burning Wish, retrieve Past in Flames (Storm – 3)
Pass the turn

Untap, draw Gitaxian Probe.
Tap Chrome Mox, Dark Ritual (BBB – Storm 1)
Then Infernal Tutor, revealing Rite of Flame (B – Storm 2).
Gitaxian Probe (17 Life), draws Lotus Petal (B – Storm 3)
Lotus Petal (B – Storm 4)
Tap City of Brass (16 life) and cast both Rite of Flame (BRRRR – Storm 6).
Past in Flames (B – Storm 7)

Flashback mana and Infernal Tutor before Gitaxian Probe to ensure the ability to become hellbent.

FLASHBACK Dark Ritual (BBB – Storm 8)
Sacrifice Lotus Petal and FLASHBACK both Rite of Flame (BBBRRRR – Storm 10).
FLASHBACK Infernal Tutor for Burning Wish(BBRRR – Storm 11)
FLASHBACK Gitaxian Probe, draw Lion’s Eye Diamond (14 life, BBRRR – Storm 12)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (BBRRR – Storm 13)
Burning Wish putting Tendrils of Agony to hand (BRR – Storm 14)
Tap Underground Sea, Tendrils of Agony for 30 life (Storm 15)

Hand IV – TES is on the draw against BUG Delver/Team America

Opening Hand: Infernal Tutor, Chrome Mox, Dark Ritual, Lion’s Eye Diamond, Underground Sea, Gitaxian Probe, and Rite of Flame

Keep

Opponent begins the game with Verdant Catacombs for Underground Sea (19 life)
Then Deathrite Shaman

Draw Ponder for Turn
Put Underground Sea into play
Cast Gitaxian Probe (18 life – Storm 1)
Look at Daze, Polluted Delta, Hymn to Tourach, Hymn to Tourach, and Spell Pierce

Wow! That’s a stacked hand!

Draw Gemstone Mine

T.E.S. needs to go off this turn, if the deck allows Team America to untap, this is a very rough game for the home team.

Chrome Mox, imprinting Rite of Flame (Storm 2)
Tap Underground Sea to Dark Ritual (BBB – Storm 3).
Lion’s Eye Diamond (BBB – Storm 4)
Infernal Tutor, breaking Lion’s Eye Diamond, get Empty the Warrens (BRRR – Storm 5)
Empty the Warrens for 12 Goblins (Storm 6).

Opponent untap, draws
Then casts Ponder then draws
Searches through their deck with Polluted Delta (18 life)
Activates Deathrite Shaman (Exiles Verdant Catacomb)
Plays Tarmogoyf, then passes the turn

Untap, draw Rite of Flame
Attack for a possible twelve
The Team America opponent blocks with Tarmogoyf and takes eleven (7 life).
Pass the turn

The opponent untaps, draws
Casts Brainstorm and begins shuffling for the next game

The fact that they didn’t stop playing gives me the suspicion that they play a singleton or pair of Maelstrom Pulse along side of Abrupt Decay.

Hand V – TES is on the draw against BUG Delver/Team America

Opening Hand – Volcanic Island, Duress, Ponder, Gemstone Mine, Rite of Flame, Infernal Tutor, and Lotus Petal.

Keep

A decent hand but slow.

Team America mulligans
Opponent leads off the game with a Polluted Delta, cracks it for an Underground Sea
Casts Thoughtseize (17 life) taking Infernal Tutor from TES’s hand.
Pass the Turn

Draw Lotus Petal for turn
Play Volcanic Island, Lotus Petal (Storm 1)
Cast Ponder (Storm 2)

This is to avoid Daze.

Look at Gemstone Mine, Rite of Flame, and Silence
Shuffle and draw into Infernal Tutor.
Pass the turn

Team America untaps and draws
Plays a Verdant Catacomb for a Bayou (16 life)
Casts Hymn to Tourach.
Infernal Tutor and Rite of Flame are discarded
The current TES hand is Lotus Petal, Gemstone Mine, and Duress
Team America also has three cards.

Untap and draw Ponder for the turn
Tap Volcanic Island and Ponder (Storm 1)
Look at Scalding Tarn, Lion’s Eye Diamond, and Burning Wish
Draw Scalding Tarn first

I’d like to wait to see if they attempt to keep us off mana by destroying a Petal with Decay before playing Lion’s Eye Diamond.

Play Gemstone Mine
Play Lotus Petal
Pass the turn

Team America untaps and draws
Plays a Misty Rainforest and a Tarmogoyf
Then passes the turn with two cards in hand

Untap and draw Lion’s Eye Diamond for the turn

Tap Gemstone Mine (2 Counters) and cast Duress (Storm 1)
Look at Abrupt Decay and a second Tarmogoyf, discard Decay
Play both Scalding Tarn and Lion’s Eye Diamond (Storm 2)
Pass the turn without a hand.

Team America untaps and draws
Plays a Wasteland destroying Volcanic Island and the second Tarmogoyf
Attacks for three (TES – 17 life) with no hand.

Untap and draw Burning Wish for the turn
Activate Scalding Tarn to find Underground Sea
Tap Sea and Gemstone (1 Counter) to cast Burning Wish for Past in Flames

This way if it’s discarded, it can always be flashed back

Team America untaps and draws
Attacks for six (11 life) and passes the turn

Untap and draw Gitaxian Probe for the turn
Gitaxian Probe (9 Life), look at a lonely Force of Will, draw Rite of Flame (Storm 1)
Tap Gemstone Mine (0 Counters, sacrifice) and cast Rite of Flame (RRR – Storm 2)
Tap Underground Sea
Cast Past in Flames, in response break Lion’s Eye Diamond (BBB – Storm 3)
FLASHBACK Infernal Tutor for Lion’s Eye Diamond (B – Storm 4)
Lion’s Eye Diamond (B – Storm 5)
FLASHBACK Gitaxian Probe (7 life), draw Ponder (B – Storm 6)
Sacrifice one of the Lotus Petals, FLASHBACK both Rite of Flame (BRRRR – Storm 8)
FLASHBACK Infernal Tutor, break Lion’s Eye Diamond in response (BBBRRR – Storm 9)
Find Burning Wish and cast it (BBRR – Storm 10)
Tendrils of Agony for 22 life. (Storm 11)

    1. Actually, no. I went over it in the first storm hands, it’s because combo isn’t as concerned with card quality as it is finding the right cards. By casting Ponder first there’s a potential four more cards you get to see. After Brainstorming, there’s seven. If you Brainstorm then Ponder, there’s a potential four cards.

    2. By playing Ponder then Brainstorm there’s a potential view of seven cards. Playing Brainstorm then Ponder, there’s a view of five cards. In combo you’re more concerned with finding the appropriate cards rather than the highest quality of cards through-out a game. Combo doesn’t succeed as well post the initial turns, in order to have the highest success rate you want the best cards for the situation. In order to achieve this you want to look at the maximum number of cards possible.

  1. Hand V: That Burning Wish is a sick rip off the top. I’ve been in that situation a hundred times and I never seem to get that Wish.

Curious about Duress. How much better is it than Orim’s Chant? Its biggest use seems to be imprinting for Chrome Mox…

    1. Duress is needed, the information provided while protecting you is incredibly crucial. It’s also important to diversify your hate cards/protection. Seven Chant effects isn’t nearly as useful as 4/3.

  2. These articles are a tremendous help to me in learning the deck, especially the hands fighting through the opponent’s discard or counters. Just wanted to say thanks, and I hope you will keep them coming.
