The Captain’s Log: Gatecrash Prerelease Weekend

The Captain’s Log – Gatecrash Prerelease Weekend

This past weekend, as I am sure many of you did, I spent an enormous amount of time at my various local shops prereleasing. This a time that comes four times a year and it is when all the anticipation of all the spoilers and eventually the full list of the set getting revealed all come to a head and we all are finally able to get to play with the new cards. For me analyzing new cards is a very important part of the game. Maybe it is just the way I learn best or that we get to see how all the new cards truly interact with each other to determine the actual power level. Whatever the case, being able to sit down with the actual cards is much more exciting than reading about them on a spoiler list.

The Captains Log: Surviving Staticaster

The Captains Log: Surviving Staticaster

In the past few weeks my focus has been strictly on Standard in preparation for Grand Prix Atlantic City. I have been running Esper control in recent tournaments since the TCG invitational and I have been extremely impressed with this deck. It seems this deck has everything that you would want; an early game for those pesky BR agro decks, a mid game with Supreme Verdicts and Lingering Souls, as well as a strong late game with Tamiyo, the Moon Sage and Sphinx’s Revelation.

The Captain’s Log: Adapting RUG for the Current Metagame

The Captain’s Log: Adapting RUG for the Current Metagame

As of late there has been a disturbing trend in our local and the broader meta game at large. RUG is on the decline! Now by decline I mean RUG staggered from almost 30% of a typical Star City Games tournament to a ghastly 20%. What a stark drop isn’t it? Don’t be worried though the deck is far from dead, there is just something else lurking in the shadows. But that is a discussion of a later date, this week we talk about the problem. The Captain’s Log: Stifled Opportunities

The Captain’s Log: Stifled Opportunities

It is well known among the magic community that I am a huge fan of Stifle. I was always a huge proponent of playing this card in RUG and when people were cutting it I was advocating harder and harder for it. There are many reasons why this card is amazing and today I will go into full detail why this card is amazing and how much tempo and value it adds to your game as a RUG player.

The Captain’s Log – TCG 50k Invitational Tournament Report Pt. 2

The Captain’s Log – TCG 50k Invitational Tournament Report Pt. 2

The last time we spoke I left you with an 8-1 record, flying high after a very satisfying day one. I came out with experience and knowledge of the matchups and I knew what I wanted to see every round and what I wanted to avoid.  After a long day one my friends and I decided to go see what Indianapolis had to offer. To my surprise the city was booming.

The Captain’s Log – TCG 50k Invitational Tournament Report

In my last article I discussed which of the two decks I was pondering over for the TCG 50k Invitational. You can see the lists here. I spoke in detail on why I thought both of these decks could be the best choices for me, though the debating and discussing did not end with that article. I wasn’t happy with either of the deck lists for various reasons. The UW list I felt was just not strong enough and in a format with a great mana base why restrict yourself to two colors at the cost of not being able to play more powerful cards. The Captain’s Log: Play What You Know!

The Captain’s Log: Play What You Know!

As is tradition for me before any big road trip I am currently testing and trying to decide on the best list to sling at the SCG Invitational in Indianapolis. There are various different lists I have been thinking about in the past month or so. With a format as wide open as Standard is right now I don’t think there really is a bad choice. What is important for any tournament that you really want to do well in is playing what you know.
