Round 2 Feature Match- Tim Sussino (RUG Show and Tell) vs. Dan Rae (BUG Tempo)

Game 1 Dan beats Tim down to 7 life (Dan at 20) but a late Emrakul swings the game back in Tim’s favor.  In game 2 Dan has counters for early threats from Tim but can only find a Tarmogoyf to apply pressure.  Tim resolves Submerge, Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Submerge, and Show and Tell revealing Emrakul in successive turns, putting the match away in his favor.

Tim 2 Dan 0

Round 3 Feature Match- Eric English RUG vs. Bryant Cook The EPIC Storm

In game 1 Eric Wastelands Bryant’s white source, keeping him off Orim’s Chant mana.  Bryant has the Duress, seeing a Eric’s Force of Will and taking away Brainstorm, the only hope to cast it.  Bryant plays Rite of Flame, Rite of Flame, Rite of Flame, Burning Wish for Past in Flames.  On to game 2.  Eric takes away some early action from Bryant with a Vendilion Clique and proceeds to beat down with them and a Tarmogoyf.  Bryant is at 6 (taking some damage from his own City of Brass) and is forced to go for it.  Eric plays another Vendilion Clique, sees Dark Ritual, LED, LED, Lotus Petal, Ad Naseum, chooses to take nothing.  Bryant plays out his hand, evetually flipping Infernal Tutor which finds the Tendrils of Agony.  Eric extends his hand.

Bryant 2 Eric 0

Round 4 Feature Match Adam Barnello RUW Stoneblade vs. Greg Komar RUG Tempo

Komar takes game 1 after flashing back a previously Force-of-Willed Chain Lightning with Snapcaster Mage to kill a Jace, the Mind Sculptor.  Game 2 Komar starts the game with 2 Delver of Secrets.  Turn 3 both swing in unflipped at Barnello’s seemingly unprotected head, but a flashed in Snapcaster Mage makes a trade with one, before it can turn into the horrifying Insectile Aberration.  Eventually both Delvers are dealt with, a Grim Lavamancer from Komar is shown the door to the graveyard. Barnello resolves a Stoneforge Mystic, who forges him a DCI Judge Promo Sword of Fire and Ice and a Batterskull (whose Living Weapon mechanic gets Stifled), now facing down a Crucible of Worlds and Jace, the Mind Sculptor on Komar’s side.  Jace and a Snapcaster are both Red Elemental Blasted.  The Sword falls prey to Ancient Grudge.  A surprise Purify the Grave puts an end to Crucible/Wasteland shenanigans.  Both players seem to have all the answers to each other’s plays, but in the end a Snapcaster Mage flashing back a Lightning Bolt can’t be dealt with by the singular Spell Pierce occupying Barnello’s hand.

Greg 2-0

Round 6 Feature Match- Adam Barnello RUW Stoneblade vs. Jon Barber UG Tempo

The Blue Green Tempo matchup has already proved a rough one for Barnello’s deck today.  Jon Spell Snares Adam’s first Stoneforge Mystic, and plays Nimble Mongoose on his turn.  Adam Brainstorms, drawing out a Daze, which he Forces. Brainstorm resolves, sending equipment to the top.  Adam cracks to fetch Tundra and shuffle.  Jon Wastelands the Tundra, the Nimble Mongoose continues its onslaught.  On his turn Adam Wastelands Jon’s Tropical Island, leaving Jon with no lands on board. A Snapcaster Mage finally lands to trade with the Mongoose, Adam draws and decides to pack it in.

Jon 1 Adam 0

In game 2, Adam mulligans Jon keeps. “Why wouldn’t you? It’s just my tournament on the line.” Adam replies. They play land-go for two turns, Adam has two fetches, Jon has a land and a fetch. Jon plays a Ponder and shuffles.  Adam fetches and goes for a Basic.  He casts a Stoneforge, who finds Batterskull. Jon attempts Bolt on Stoneforge Mystic at the End of Turn, but Adam has Spell Pierce backup. Jon taps Volcanic Island on his turn, and Adam instinctively reaches for the Stoneforge Mystic, but it’s for Brainstorm. Jon places the 2 cards on top and cracks his fetch to shuffle.  After dropping a Delver of Secrets, Jon passes.  Adam is holding Swords to Plowshares, Snapcaster Mage, Vendilion Clique and Batterskull, all action. He draws Mishra’s Factory and playes it, leaving his mana open, he passes back. The Delver of Secrets triggers, Jon looks at a Krosan Grip and decides to reveal it to transform.  Adam flashes in Vendilion Clique at the end of Jon’s draw step. Jon sighs and asks who the target is. “You!” Adam responds, with a little glee in his tone for the first time this match. Grip finds its way to the bottom of the library. Jon Ponders. The Insect swings, and runs into Adams Swords to Plowshares. Second Main Phase Jon plays a Sylvan Library, and passes. Back on Adam’s side the Vendilion Clique swings, and once again Adam leaves 5 mana up and passes, with an active Stoneforge Mystic on board and Batterskull in hand. Jon resolves the Sylvan Library trigger and keeps 1 extra card.  He plays a Nimble Mongoose and passes.  Adam cheats in Batterskull in the End of Turn step.  On his turn he draws, swings in with Vendilion Clique, and passes. Jon casts a Tarmogoyf on his turn, which runs into the Path to Exile Adam found on his.  Jon casts Ponder #3, and once more shuffles.  Another Mongoose comes down. He passes. Adam draws, activates a Mishra’s Factory, contemplates his attack for a minute and swings with the fleet. An Ancient Grudge appears and finds Adam’s Snapcaster Mage.  Jon realizes that with the Stoneforge Mystic the attack is lethal, and picks it up.

Jon 1 Adam 1

On to Game 3  both keep. Barber cracks his turn 1 Polluted Delta signaling a spell. As predicted Nimble Mongoose appears.  Jon Wastelands Barnello’s early Factory and continues to swing with the Mongoose. With one basic land alone on his field Adam takes a minute to decide which of his duals he wants to draw a Wasteland out with, finally playing a Volcanic Island. He passes.  The Wasteland does come to destroy the Volcanic Island, and once again Mongoose swings.  On Adams side the remaining Tundra is played, followed up with a Stoneforge Mystic.  Jon has the Spell Snare.  Adam passes, Mongoose attacks.  Second Main Phase Jon drops a Tarmogoyf, which sees a Path to Exile at End of Turn. Adam plays a third land and passes.  Jon swings with one Mongoose and plays a second.  Adam plays his fourth mana and taps out for Jace the Mind Sculptor.  Staring down two shrouded Mongeese, he Brainstorms with Jace and passes. John splits Nimble Mongoose attacks between Jace and Barnello’s head.  Jace dies and Jon passes.  On his turn Adam successfully baits a Spell Snare with Snapcaster Mage, resolves Stoneforge Mystic, again searching out Batterskull.  Stoneforge Mystic meets Dismember end of turn.  Adams looks at the Planechase die in his box of dice and comtemplates changing planes. He extends the hand.

Jon 2 Adam 1

Finals Feature Bryant Cook (T.E.S.) vs Adam Najman ( RUG Tempo)

Game 1:

Adam won the die roll and mulled to 6, Bryant decided to keep his hand of 7. Adam led off with a Tropical Island and passed. Bryant’s turn 1 was Volcanic Island into Ponder, which he kept and had Gemstone Mine, Duress, Infernal Tutor then passed the turn back to Adam. Adam played another Tropical Island and cast Tarmogoyf before passing back to Bryant. On his turn Bryant played a Gemstone Mine and cast Duress. The Duress revealed Volcanic Island, Tarmogyof, Stifle, Daze, Bryant took the Daze. On Adam’s third turn he played the Volcanic Island and cast his second Tarmogoyf and attacked Bryant for 2. Bryant’s turn 3 looked like he might be ready to go off, and sure enough he played a second Gemstone Mine and cast Orim’s Chant. The chant resolved and Bryant cast Dark Ritual, Dark Ritual, Lotus Petal, Chrome Mox, with no imprint, and then Infernal Tutor for Ad Nauseam. Bryant took himself down to 4 and had enough gas for Adam to scoop them up and move to game 2.

Bryant 1-0 Adam

Bryant Sideboard:

In: 3x Pyroblast

Out: 1x Ponder, 1x Chrome Mox, 1x Infernal Tutor

Adam Sideboard:

Out: 4x Ponder

In: Didn’t get a chance to see what he brought in but I believe it was at least 2 blast effects and a single Spell Pierce.

Game 2:

Adam was on the play again for game 2 and leads off with a Scalding Tarn. Bryant’s turn 1 consisted of playing a Gemstone Mine and casting Duress, which reveals Wasteland, Spell Snare, Tarmogoyf, Lightning Bolt, and Wooded Foothills. Bryant took the Spell Snare and passed. On turn 2 Adam simply Wastelanded Bryant’s Mine and passed back. Bryant played another Gemstone Mine and casted Ponder and kept Infernal Tutor, City of Brass, and Lotus Petal on top. Adam again Wastelanded the Gemstone Mine and passed back. Bryant layed a fetch land and passed back. Adam played a Tropical Island on turn 4 and passed back to Bryant who played the City of Brass and passed back. Turn 5 finally yielded a spell from Adam- he played a Wooded Foothills, broke his Scalding Tarn for a Volcanic Island and cast a Tarmogoyf. Bryant on his turn simply played a Volcanic Island and passed. Goyf swung for 3 on the next turn, then on Bryant’s next turn he tried for a Burning Wish.  Adam responded by casting a Snapcaster Mage targeting Spell Snare, which countered the Wish. Turn 7 Adam attacked for 5, taking Bryant down to 12. On his next main phase Bryant tried for a Brainstorm, but it was met with a Pyroblast from Adam. Adam’s next turn he attacked for 5 more damage, taking Bryant to 7, and passed the turn. Bryant drew for the turn, dropped to 6 from City of Brass, and cast Silence, in response to the Silence Adam threw 2 Lightning Bolts at Bryant’s head to kill him and take the match to a game 3.

Bryant 1 Adam 1

Game 3:

Bryant was on the play for game 3 and kept his opening 7, while Adam threw his back and decided to keep his next hand of 6. Bryant led off with a Scalding Tarn into an Underground Sea, which is Wastelanded on Adam’s first turn. Each played a land-go on their next turn. On Turn 3 Bryant had 2 Gemtstone Mines in play. Adam played a Wasteland and broke his Scalding Tarn to get a Tropical Island to cast Goyf. On turn 4 Bryant cast a Duress which revealed 2x Force of Will, Spell Pierce, 2x Dismember. Bryant took Force, then played and cracked a Polluted Delta for an Underground Sea and passed.  Adam attacked for 3 with Goyf on his turn and passed back. Turn 6 Bryant decided to go for it, he played a Chrome Mox imprinting Tendrils of Agony, followed by Lotus Petal, Lion’s Eye Diamond, and then a Rite of Flame. From there Bryant cast Ad Nauseam, to which Adam responded by playing Spell Pierce when Bryant only had LED and Lotus Petal available for mana, with a Pyroblast in his hand.  Bryant decided to crack his LED for 3 black and use 2 to pay for the Pierce.  However, Adam drew a blue card and was able to pitch to Force of Will the Ad Nauseam. From there Bryant drew nothing relevant and died to a Goyf attacking him for 4 for three turns. Adam Najman claimed the win and is our Jupiter Games December 2011 NELC Champion!
